Passed this building as I drove through a different neighborhood near work....

A tangle -day239

A tangle -day239, originally uploaded by tpurk.

I'm busy working on the next Zentangle challenge and realized I haven't done my POTD, so......I killed 2 birds with one stone since I already had the doodling mess out.

Coffee break -day238

Coffee break -day238, originally uploaded by tpurk.

A little still life I set up in response to the Creative Tuesday challenge of "ideal coffee break". However, I don't drink coffee or tea, so that's actually diet Pepsi!

Coiled -day237

Coiled -day237, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Looking for something different to photograph and as I was dismantling an old address book for collage material, I ended up with this coil. Hmmm...........

Fence Friday - day236

HFF - my first! - day236, originally uploaded by tpurk.

My first participation in the challenge of hunting down a photogenic fence on Friday each week. I like the dynamic, clean lines created by this shot.

Playful -day235

Playful -day235, originally uploaded by tpurk.

When low on inspiration (or just plain tired), default shots are either a flower or the cat - she was being cooperative, so I chose her....

Camping -day234

Camping -day234, originally uploaded by tpurk.

We went camping for a few days to Ohanapecosh on Mt. Rainier. The weather was perfect and the scenery stunning! It was hard to pick just one for each day....

Only took 2 tear-down shots and then totally forgot when we got home, so tear-down it is.

Mt Rainier -day233

Mt Rainier -day233, originally uploaded by tpurk.

We went camping for a few days to Ohanapecosh on Mt. Rainier. The weather was perfect and the scenery stunning! It was hard to pick just one for each day....

Mt. Rainier and Emmons glacier (the brown part down low) This was from the Sunrise area - all the meadows were covered in wildflowers since it was so late getting warm this year. It was gorgeous!

Sparkle -day232

I noticed this giant web on one of our hikes.

This shot was sitting at the campsite looking up - those are some TALL trees!

Butterfly -day230

Butterfly -day230, originally uploaded by tpurk.

A rare shot for me - a critter. or two.

We're headed to Mt Rainier tomorrow morning, camping w/ R&C so will have some "story" photos in a few days. Stay tuned!

Abstract -day229

Hmmmm?

Yep, another flower shot! :) Dahlias + deliberate motion = abstract!

Oh no! -day228

Oh no! -day228, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Got home from work and this is the view out my bedroom window! Dozer working hard, another house about to be squeezed in there so our view, sun, and privacy will be seriously compromised! Bummer.

Berry Bokeh -day227

Berry Bokeh -day227, originally uploaded by tpurk.

This is the first time I've taken a photo with the intent to capture bokeh. And it worked!

Bokeh is the out of focus, shiny spots in the background - sometimes a highly prized effect when done right. Some definitions say it's anything out of focus in the background, but my sense it that it's most usually the reflected/refracted light that makes little circles or hexagons (depending on the camera lens).

Marbles -day226

Marbles -day226, originally uploaded by tpurk.

I scored a great deal on this big apothecary jar (only $10!) but it sat empty for a couple weeks while I waited for inspiration about what to put inside. Then I remembered D's extensive marble collection. Perfect!

Faux storm -day225

Faux storm -day225, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Hard to believe that I'd have to make up a rain storm in Seattle, but I wanted to practice capturing/freezing raindrops, so I pulled out the hose. Plus, it rarely rains this hard - this is the land of drizzle after all.

building -day224

building -day224, originally uploaded by tpurk.

"D, quick pull over, I need a POTD!" So, he did and this cool cement "factory" (I think) was a wealth of possibilities - I'll definitely go back.... So nice that he's willing to stop and wait and wait while I poke around for the best angle - take 20 shots to only post one! What a guy!

Creative Frenzy -day223

Creative Frenzy -day223, originally uploaded by tpurk.

I'm so lucky to have a room dedicated to my crafting and art (and overflow storage) but it can get a little messy when I'm in a creative frenzy :) Today was clean up the work table day - now that I can see bottom again, I feel like I can start a new project. And I did.....will be sharing soon.

Juxtaposition -day222

Juxtaposition -day222, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Along the street facing the beach on Alki in Seattle, there are little spots of older homes that won't give way to make room for new, big condos. These people apparently want some privacy too since they've hidden their homes behind all these flowers!

Yet Another Dahlia -day221

Believe it or not, this is SOOC (straight out of camera), no PSE processing.  Sometimes mistakes can turn into interesting shots.  This is actually a deep purple dahlia on the kitchen table, but I forgot to change the white balance from outside to in and ended up with this over bright, hot pink flower that looks like it's been through photoshop.....  Anyway, I thought it looked interesting.

Abandoned -day220

Tried a quasi still life today with moderate success.  It seems like it should be so easy to set up and the lighting was good natural light, but there were LOTS of bad arrangements - this was the best of the bunch...

8/9/11

Bee -day219

Went back over to the botanical garden today after being away for several weeks - there were lots of new things in bloom (see below) but Dan said to make this one my POTD since I rarely get critters in my shots.

Here are some of the other fave shots from today's garden trek:

Astilbe

Clematis

Climbing rose

Phlox

Clematis over the arbor in the background.....what a gorgeous garden!!

mossy branch -day218

Went to our most local, smaller beach today and took a few shots (see below) but my POTD is this mossy section on a tree trunk  - the sun was hitting it just right to highlight it and I under exposed it to eliminate the tree trunk and distractions.  Ended up with a kind of abstract.....

This one I took to represent the theme "serenity" for a challenge blog I follow - kinda liked it.

8/7/11

Evening Light -day217

Dan had the camera all day at the hydro races and by the time he got home, the sun was low in the sky.  I was watering my deck plants and noticed the sun shining on this rose.  The focus is a little softer than I'd wanted, but I think it still works and captures the softness of the flower.

My runner up is yet another dahlia shot - these are SO cool looking.  Love this one with the two colors and curly petals.

Sculpture -day216

A sculpture at the Tukwila light rail station - near the airport.

Here's another one.  Very different from each other and hanging in opposite corners of the structure.

Clock Tower -day215

Clock Tower -day215, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Had to go to Office Max today and it's located in this building, the old Sears Building on 1st Ave S in Seattle. What a cool clock tower, huh? Our sun is gone again (it was only here 4-5 days -sigh) so once again the sky is blown out bright gray clouds....

8/4/11

Little bloom -day213

Oops - forgot to post a day....I hate it when that happens! :)

I was totally uninspired and swore no more flower pics.  But, here I am sitting on the deck, enjoying the sun and my corner of flowers.  I pick up the camera and idly pan it across the deck and this pops into the viewfinder.  I liked the light and the movement of the grass leaves with just the bright little blossom.  So, flower it is.  sigh.

Trains -day214

Trains -day214, originally uploaded by tpurk.

I drive the overpass over this train yard every day to work and keep thinking there has to be a multitude of shots here. So today I stopped and made a first attempt. I converted to BW then added a couple textures to create a vintage, turn of century look.... Try clicking on it to see it larger and really notice the details of the texturing.

Mirrored Dahlia -day212

Mirrored Dahlia -day212, originally uploaded by tpurk.

I tried a new technique - using a black piece of glass as a mirror, I took the photo but it was boring and uneven - I have to work on the lighting. So, I added a couple of textures to "save" it. Think it definitely is more interesting.

Eric -day211

Son -day211, originally uploaded by tpurk.

Eric came over and went down to Lincoln Park with me to take a walk and enjoy the perfect Seattle weather. He grudgingly consented to the pic :)
